I accidentally hit the delete button on my iPhone 6 and removed a voice memo. I thought there would be a Trash to look for the item but I couldn't find it. How can I recover deleted files off Voice Memos on iPhone?
In an iPhone, photos or videos get deleted will go to a folder called "Recently Deleted" under Albums in Photos (more in this iPhone photo recovery article).
But it's different for voice memos. Even if you can see a trash icon when you tap on a file, unlike photos or videos, there isn't such trash for deleted voice memos.
However, that doesn't mean you lose the file for good. Here are a few steps you can take to try to get back the lost recording off your iPhone.
Note: this guide works with all iPhone models as long as your device is running under iOS 8 or later versions.
1. Check if you've shared the voice memos
Maybe you've used AirDrop and shared the voice memo with your iPad or Mac, or emailed your friends or colleagues who would use the recording. Also remember to check the video/audio editing software you're using, maybe you've imported it there. Anyway, you get the point. Check, check, and check.
2. Restore voice memos from iCloud or iTunes backups (if you have)
Not sure if you've set up backups for your iPhone and how often you do so, but iCloud or iTunes backups can easily restore your lost voice memo provided that you've backed it up before it got deleted.
If you do have a backup, congratulations. Just follow the step by step guide from this Apple support tutorial. Otherwise, move on to the next solution.
3. Use data recovery software
All iPhone voice memos are saved in .m4a file format. So an ideal data recovery software should not only support recovery of this kind of audio format, but it also works with your iPhone model. This has filtered out most of the programs available in the market.
We've reviewed the best iPhone data recovery tools, which support all modern iPhone models including iPhone 4/4S/5/5S/6/6S/7, check them out if you have time.
To take an example, we're here to show you the step by step guide on how to recover your voice memos using Dr.Fone. Note: the software isn't freeware, you'll have to purchase the program to recover and save your files it finds.
- Get Dr.Fone and install the app on your computer.
- Now connect your iPhone to your computer.
- Launch the application and follow the instructions as shown on the screen to scan your iPhone (or iTunes, iCloud).
- Once the scan is complete, preview the found files, pay attention to the audio column and see if your voice memos are listed there.
- If your deleted voice memo is there, congrats. Select the file and recover it. Done.
Once you manage to retrieve the lost iPhone memos, remember to make a few copies. Also, remember to always backup your iPhone on a regular basis. This will save you lots of headaches if another data loss hits.
